A week of bickering, complaining, laughing, screaming, arguing over where to eat, what to do, and having a blast… we took the family on a week long vacation. And I loved it! I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. As the kids get older and aren’t around as much, moments when we are all together are moments I cherish. Even if they are arguing… it makes me feel like they are kids again.
Our week started out by blowing a tire on the camper about an hour and a half into the trip. A very nice couple stopped and helped us put the spare on and then we made a detour to a tire store where we had to wait two hours on a heavy rain storm to pass before they could change our tires. After a three hour delay, we were back on the road. We arrived at our campground in Hatteras Village around 8pm. Thankfully, I had cooked supper the night before and all we had to do was warm up the casserole and eat.
We stayed at Hatteras Sands Campground in Hatteras Village. I loved it. It as less touristy and less crowded than other parts of the island. The campground was very nice. The sites are paved and level, the bath house was very nice and clean, there was a very nice pool and the staff was super-friendly! Thank you Sherri, and all of the staff for a wonderful week!
We saw three lighthouses, going up to the top of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We also saw the Bodie Island Lighthouse and Ocracoke Lighthouse. We took a ferry ride over to Ocracoke where we spent an afternoon and evening walking around visiting many shops and a great little restaurant right on the Marina, SmacNally’s. We rented a Jeep for a day and rode around on the beaches, walked out into the sound, and played in the ocean. We visited the Marina near the campground many times along with the shops at the marina. We all played putt-putt and the kids raced go-carts. We ate (A LOT) of ice cream! Someone wanted to go get ice cream every night, so we tried out almost every ice cream place around!
We relaxed by the pool and spent some time relaxing in the air conditioning inside the camper as it was an extremely hot week! The high humidity and 90 degree temps were tempered only slightly by occasional breezes and storms. The lack of breeze But it was still a week of no work and being with all three kids!
On the ride home, we stopped by the NC Aquarium in Nags Head. After checking out the fish and sea turtles, we headed home. Charlie slept in my lap most of the ride. He enjoyed his week of playing in the ocean and sleeping in the air conditioning. The kids all seemed to enjoy the vacation. Now its back to work and school. We sent summer out with a bang!
